Android's Share In Mobile OS Market Crosses 80 Pct In July-September

Shipments of Android operating system-based Smartphones rose to over 211 million in the July- September quarter this year accounting for more than 80 percent of global mobile OS market share, research firm IDC said.

"With a total base of 211.6 million smartphone units shipped during the quarter, Android accounted for 81 percent of all smartphone shipments, marking the first time Android topped 80 percent in its short history," IDC said.

Despite high saturation rates in number of mature markets, the overall smartphone space grew 39.9 percent year-over-year (y-o-y) in the third quarter, it added.

Another major success story was that of Windows Phone OS, which grew by 156 percent y-o-y.

"Granted, volumes started from a small base of 3.7 million units a year ago and overall market share is still less than five per cent. But Microsoft's efforts, with Nokia's support behind it, helped drive the platform into multiple tiers and price points," IDC noted.

Android and Windows Phone continued to make significant strides in the third quarter. Despite their differences in market share, they both have one important factor behind their success, price, IDC Mobile Phone team Research Manager Ramon Llamas said.

Motorola Unveils Budget Smartphone; India Launch In January

Motorola wants to equip the world with the latest smartphone technology at less than a third the typical price.

The new Moto G phone starts at $179 in the US without a contract requirement. That compares with $600 or more that people must pay for phones without traditional two-year service agreements.

Motorola, which is owned by Google Inc, said today that it will target an estimated 500 million people worldwide who cannot afford phones costing more than $200.

In the past, the company said, those consumers were limited to phones with technology that is at least a year old and thus unable to run the latest apps and services.

The company is targeting not just emerging markets, but budget-conscious consumers in the US.

Although people can often get phones with contracts at the lower price, service fees are higher because they include the cost of subsidising those phones. And many people do not have good enough credit to qualify and are limited to so-called pre-paid plans, which are not eligible for the subsidised prices.

With the Moto G, Motorola is trying to offer a device that is closer to what is available on leading high-end phones, although it will not work on the faster 4G LTE networks emerging around the world. That is in part because many target customers are still on 3G or even older technology.

The phone starts selling in Brazil and parts of Europe on Wednesday. It will be available in Canada, parts of Asia and the rest of Europe and Latin America over the next few weeks. It is expected in the US, India, the Middle East and additional markets in Asia in January. Motorola expects to start selling it in selected African markets early next year.

HTC One Android 4.3 software leaks, available as ROM

The HTC One’s Android 4.3 update should be ready to hit devices sometime before the end of September. If HTC is to keep its promise, that is. With the update coming so soon, we knew we would start seeing leaks and today we have the first one!
The leaked firmware belongs to the international HTC One and is leaked by ROM developerLlabTooFeR. Firmware version 3.09.401.1 is not a monumental improvement over the current version, but you will definitely see some cool changes and get the feel of Android 4.3.

Camera software is now improved with highlight reel features and better music syncing. In addition, you get all the features new in Android 4.3, including always-on Wi-Fi location scanning and OpenGL support. The task manager is also said to be a bit different, along with animations and sounds.
These are mostly aesthetic changes, but performance seems to be a bit faster and smoother. Like we said, this may not have you salivating, but it’s a great update to wait for… or not. You can actually get it now with the MaximusHD ROM. And soon you will also be able to get the pure firmware as a ROM, as well.
The developer states he will release the firmware on August 28 at 10 AM GMT, so get your fingers ready if you want to test the original firmware! As always, be very careful with rooting and ROMing your devices. Tinkering with your phone may harm your device and/or void your warranty. All responsibility will fall upon you, so you want to make sure you do your research and know what you are doing

HTC Zara leaks as a mid-range phone with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean

HTC Zara with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and HTC Sense 5.5
TAIWANESE PHONE MAKER HTC reportedly is gearing up to bring yet another mid-range phone to the smartphone market, as a handset called the HTC Zara has leaked online.
The leak comes via evleaks, which given its good track record with rumours suggests that the HTC Zara is the real deal. Hopefully HTC will decide to rename the handset before its release, though.
According to the leak that appeared on Twitter on Tuesday morning, the HTC Zara will be another mid-range alternative to the HTC One, following in the footsteps of the HTC One Mini. Unlike the One Mini though, the HTC Zara will have a casing constructed out of plastic yet offering a design similar to that of the flagship HTC One.

Within this casing the HTC Zara reportedly will feature a 4.5in qHD 960x540 LCD touchscreen, confirming its place within the firm's mid-range lineup. This reportedly will be powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8930 processor with 1GB of RAM and Google's latest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean mobile operating system.
Perhaps most interestingly, the leak indicates that the Zara will feature HTC Sense 5.5, and it likely will be the first device to do so. It's still unclear what will be included in the upcoming iteration of HTC's Android user interface.
Other rumoured specifications include a 2,100mAh battery, an 8MP rear-facing camera, and - if the leaked image is anything to go by - a front-facing camera, Boomsound and integrated Beats Audio technology. It might be the last device to feature this audio technology, with Beats By Dr Dre reportedly looking to end its partnership with HTC.
The HTC Zara reportedly will be announced in the fourth quarter, suggesting that it could debut alongside the rumoured HTC One Max smartphone.
There's no word on availability yet, and HTC has said that it will not be commenting
