Boost Data Storage Capacity Of Your Phone, PC

Scientists have developed a new type of holographic memory device that could provide unprecedented data storage capacity and data processing capabilities in electronic devices.

Researchers from the University of California, Riverside, Bourns College of Engineering and Russian Academy of Science developed a prototype of the new memory device that uses spin waves , a collective oscillation of spins in magnetic materials, instead of the optical beams.

Spin waves are advantageous because spin wave devices are compatible with the conventional electronic devices and may operate at a much shorter wavelength than optical devices, allowing for smaller electronic devices that have greater storage capacity, researchers said.

Experimental results obtained by the team show it is feasible to apply holographic techniques developed in optics to magnetic structures to create a magnonic holographic memory device.

"The results open a new field of research, which may have tremendous impact on the development of new logic and memory devices," said Alexander Khitun, the lead researcher, who is a research professor at UC Riverside.

Holography is a technique based on the wave nature of light which allows the use of wave interference between the object beam and the coherent background.

It is commonly associated with images being made from light, such as on driver's licenses or paper currency. However, this is only a narrow field of holography.

Holography has been recognised as a future data storing technology with unprecedented data storage capacity and ability to write and read a large number of data in a highly parallel manner.

Most of Khitun's initial research was focused on the development of spin wave-based logic circuits similar to the ones currently used in the computers.

A critical moment occurred last year when he decided the device didn't need to replace the computer's electronic circuits.

Instead, the device would complement the circuits, or help them accomplish certain tasks, such as image recognition, speech recognition and data processing.

He conducted experiments using a 2-bit magnonic holographic memory prototype device. A pair of magnets, which represent the memory elements, were aligned in different positions on the magnetic waveguides.

Spin waves propagating through the waveguides are affected by the magnetic field produced by the magnets.

When spin waves interference was applied in the experiments, a clear picture was produced and the researchers could recognise the magnetic states of the magnets.

All experiments were done at room temperature.

Acer Launches Iconia W4: First Usable Windows Mini-Tab?

Acer was the first device maker to come up with an 8-inch tablet called Iconia W3 that has Windows 8 in its crippled RT version as its operating system (OS). But, due to the below average screen, bulky appearance and expensive pricing, it remained largely unpopular.

The Taiwanese company has brought out a successor to W3 named the Iconia W4 that promises to chunk out the drawbacks of the predecessor. It comes with Windows 8.1, the latest version of Windows available, reports Anupam Saxena of Times Of India.

Design, Build and Display

Acer Iconia W4 weighing 415 grams looks heavy and bulky when compared to the iPad mini or any Android tablet. The 8-inch display panel is raised to a little extent on the frame. A hardware button is provided just below the display to help you access the Windows Start screen at the tap of a button. The Power or screen-lock key is located at the top edge.

The 2MP front-facing camera is placed at the top in portrait mode while the 5MP camera is provided at the rear. The rear camera does not come with an LED flash so it's not possible to click acceptable pictures in low light conditions.

Acer Iconia W4 has an 8-inch LED multi-touch display (1280 x 800 pixels). The manufacturer has taken in user’s feedback and has improved the screen. Colours look bright and viewing angles are good too. Text and graphics look sharp and crisp as well. But, the only drawback with Iconia W4 is that the display is very reflective and not suitable for outdoor use. The tablet sports a 5-point multi-touch control too.

Hardware and Performance

Under the hood, Acer Iconia W4 is powered by a 1.33GHz quad-core processor from Intel coupled with 2 gigabyte of RAM. For graphic support, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD GPU is made use of.

It was reported that the tablet performed well in daily tasks like web browsing, playing casual games, using Office, and watching HD videos. The tablet can handle games like Jetpack Joyride and Angry Birds, which can be downloaded from the Windows Store.

For casual use, the tablet delivers about 7 hours of battery backup with the screen on full brightness and when connected to Wi-Fi. It can be charged with any micro-USB charger. A 64GB variant of the tablet provided about 40GB space expanded up to 64GB via a microSD card.

Software

The tablet presents a good Windows 8.1 experience. You can run all applications like Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop or Tally on a regular Windows PC or notebook. Iconia W4 also has Office Home and Student 2013 edition pre-installed. Apps like Acer Docs, Acer Media, Nero BackItUp, Evernote Touch, Amazon, Kindle, newsXpresso, TuneIn radio and Skype are already installed for the user.

Motorola launches Moto G Specifications,Features,Price

Motorola launches Moto G at Rs 11,311Betting big on growing market of low-cost smartphones, Google-owned Motorola has announced its 'premium' yet affordable smartphone, the Moto G, priced at $179 (Rs 11,311). The phone, which will be available without a wireless service contract, is about one third of the price of Apple Inc's new iPhone 5C.

The Moto G, aimed at consumers in developing countries like Brazil and India as well as budget-buyers in Western countries, is the second major new product that Motorola has developed since it was bought by Google in 2012.
During the launch event, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside said given that most people can’t afford a $500 or $600 phone today, the average range worldwide is more around the $200 mark. “But these phone can’t offer the best experience. We believe half a billion people deserve better,” Woodside said, before announcing the Moto G.

The Moto G offers an experience that can even rival the Galaxy S4 and other modern top-end superphones according to Woodside.

The device, which has a nearly identical design as Moto X, offers the same 1,280x720-pixel resolution as the Moto X, with a slightly better pixel density of 329 pixels per inch, edging out the Moto X's 312ppi.

The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 1.2 GHz processor with 1GB of RAM, and offers “all-day” battery life. Moto G offers around 14 hours of talk time on 3G networks, vs. 10 claimed for the iPhone 5s. It runs Android 4.3, which can be upgraded to Android 4.4.

The Moto G has a 5-megapixel camera, which is far less as compared to the top-end smartphones, but considering the massively lower price, that's probably a fair tradeoff. There's also a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calling over Google Hangouts or Skype.

There’s no LTE on board, which makes sense given the target market.

Motorola allows users to make customization on the phone offering custom shells along with new flip shells that protect the screen and back.

Motorola VP of Product Management at Motorola Mobility Punit Soni said the Moto G outperforms the Galaxy S4 on boot time, browser launch, return home, making calls and more.

The Moto G will be available in a variety of garish colors, including turquoise and purple. Moto G buyers will also get an additional 50GB of Google Drive storage free with the phone (in addition to the 15 that comes with the service). There’s also an FM receiver in the phone for “access to free music,” and dual-SIM support in select markets.

While the 8GB version in the U.S., unlocked and contract free costs $179, the 16GB version is priced at $199 unlocked.

The Moto G will be available in Brazil and parts of Europe on Wednesday, with availability across Latin America, Europe and Canada in the coming weeks, and in the United States, India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East in the first quarter.

Overall, given the hardware and software, the Moto G seems to be a good buy for anyone not wanting the biggest, best hardware in their pocket.
